Sopra Steria is committed to a proactive Corporate Responsibility policy with a focus on community, economic and environmental themes. The organisation is very committed to reducing its impact on the environment and has recently been certified as CarbonNeutral® for all its data centres and business travel. Reducing its landfill waste was another commitment that the UK organisation wanted to make in support of its respect for the environment and chose to work with B&M Waste Services in 2011.
Given their aligned commitment to reducing landfill waste, Sopra Steria chose to work with B&M Waste Services in 2011.
On commencing work with B&M Waste Services, the initial project involved the removal of all desk bins, staff awareness programme as well as the introduction of mixed recycling throughout the business.
Additional services, including a reuse programme for general items, reuse and secure data wiping IT end of life equipment, on-site composting of garden waste, ethical hazardous waste management and anaerobic digestion of food waste, have been introduced to maximise environmental efficiencies and eliminate waste altogether.
Residual waste is no longer sent to landfill but instead, it is processed and generates energy from waste at a Combined Heat and Power facility. This was a really important step for Sopra Steria as reuse and zero waste to landfill are a group objective.
These new technologies have all aided the achievement of our zero landfill target for controlled office waste.
Kellie McCaughan, UK Environmental Manager at Sopra Steria, commented:
“The introduction of new services, coupled with the willingness of B&M to assist in my training and understanding of the best way to achieve segregation across the business, has led to a huge internal uptake in the new recycling initiatives we have introduced.
“Our commitment to sustainability is proven through now diverting 100% of our controlled office waste from landfill and this has assisted in our achieving the GOLD International CSR Excellence Award for ‘Team Development & Engagement’ , our CDP Investor of 100A score for two years in a row and the continual improvement of our ISO 14001 certified Environmental Management System. This not only enables us to demonstrate our sustainability credentials to our clients, but also gives us the ability to support them to become more sustainable.”
Stephanie McNally, National Account Manager at B&M Waste Services, said:
“We are proud to work with such a forward thinking customer. Sopra Steria have been enthusiastically receptive of the increased internal segregation and recycling and are now reaping the rewards of operating a sustainable waste management initiative.”
