B&M Waste Services, a carbon neutral waste management company working alongside businesses in Preston and across the UK, has won a new contract with the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) to help further improve recycling levels across the University’s Preston Campus.
The new 3 year partnership will commence on Monday 9th May 2016 and although the Guardian last year named UCLan as joint 5th in a list of the best ‘green’ national higher education providers, Mick Ashall, Director at B&M Waste Services, said the company had plenty of ideas to improve the University’s environmental performance even further.
“We’re absolutely thrilled to win this contact,” he said. “Since B&M was established in 1954, we have expanded our services offering in to the waste management field, we plan to use our experience and knowledge to make a real impact with this new account.
“Despite the University having a student and staff community approaching 38,000, only three percent of its 983 tonnes of waste ended up in a landfill site during 2014-15. It’s a good record but we think we can make significant improvement on those figures.”
In the coming months B&M Waste Services plan to implement new recycling and segregation policies specific to UCLan. The company will also introduce new technologies such as a bin tagging system, enabling bins to be collected when full and ready to be emptied; saving the University money and reducing carbon emissions.
Mick added: “The University and its students have been very receptive to the ‘segregation at source’ ethos so we believe the improvements we will deliver will increase recycling even further. Our aim is to help achieve a 100% diversion from landfill.”
B&M will support UCLan’s ‘Waste Amnesty’ and ‘Green Days’, which encourage re-use of items which may have previously been thrown away. Any residual items not re-used are passed on to Shelter, the housing and homelessness charity.
Andrew Coverdale, UCLan’s Facilities Management Business Services Manager said: “We’re delighted to be working alongside B&M Waste Services. We’re confident that by combining B&M’s industry expertise with the knowledge of our own recycling and waste team we can reduce the environmental impact of our waste even further and meet the continual improvement element of our internationally certified environmental management system.”
