B&M Waste Services win prestigious Environmental Business of the Year Award

environmental business of the yearB&M Waste Services, the North West’s largest independent waste management company, has won a prestigious business environment award.

The company has been named Environmental Business of the Year at the annual Liverpool Echo Environment Awards.

B&M, which has sites in Wirral, Manchester and Norwich, provides businesses and organisations with carbon-neutral total waste management solutions including trade waste, hazardous waste, secure shredding, drainage and recycling.

The awards recognise businesses, community groups, individuals and organisations which make a positive impact on the environment. B&M Waste Services received the award for helping Aintree University Hospital in Liverpool dramatically reduce its clinical waste output by over 23 tonnes a month.

Merseyside-headquartered B&M was initially brought in by the hospital to manage its general waste, but the company’s remit was soon extended to cover offensive waste segregation and disposal as well as introduce a recycling programme for cardboard, plastic and metal.

Working closely with hospital management B&M assisted with the design of the waste compound and also designed a bespoke waste compactor that deploys the latest compactor technology. B&M also installed 450 bins at Aintree, introduced a confidential document shredding service and a dedicated battery collection and recycling service.

B&M also provided more than 500 of the hospital’s domestic and medical staff with comprehensive training in the waste segregation system. As a result of the new segregation system the hospital recycled over 900 tonnes of waste in 2013/14, compared to approximately 50 tonnes in 2010, while also reducing the budget by over 19%. In the last two years cardboard recycling alone has increased more than threefold (to 174 tonnes in 2013/14), with 50 tonnes less general waste produced per annum, of which over 80% is currently recycled.

Rose Warnock, B&M Corporate Contracts Manager, said that Aintree was a first class example of the benefits a comprehensive waste management solution can deliver to organisations across the UK.

Rose said: “Several of the initiatives we have undertaken in partnership with Aintree University Hospital have been industry leading in the healthcare sector.  We are delighted that the Echo Environment Awards recognised our approach with Aintree University Hospital as an example of best practice in the NHS.”

Michael Morgan, Facilities Manager at Aintree University Hospital, said: “We are delighted that the work the hospital has done in partnership with B&M has been recognised in these important awards.

The partnership with B&M has helped reduce our impact on the environment and improve efficiency and has been responsible for the success of our offensive waste and recycling programme.

“The response from our staff has been fantastic and this is in no small way down to the hard work B&M put in from implementation and training to collection and disposal.”

Aintree University Hospital serves a population of around 330,000 residents in North Liverpool, Sefton and Kirkby. With 19 operating theatres, the hospital carried out more than 20,000 operations in 2013.

B&M Waste Services, one of the North West’s leading family businesses, is celebrating its 60th Birthday in 2014.
