Plastic Free July is a global movement which allows millions of people to reduce their plastic consumption and reduce plastic pollution. With over 100 million participants across 177 countries, the 12th annual Plastic Free July is set to be the biggest one yet!
An estimated 400 million tonnes of plastic are produced worldwide every single year, with the majority ending up in landfill. We’ve all seen the devastating effects of plastics on our wildlife and ecosystem, but some microplastics have even been found in human blood.
As awareness of these issues grow, large corporations are making changes, with the plastic bag levy reducing the use of disposable plastic bags by 95%. Here at B&M Waste, the reduction and proper recycling of single use plastics is a huge priority. We were even awarded ‘Plastic Free Champions’ Status by Surfers Against Sewage (SAS), as part of their Plastic Free Communities campaign in 2019.
We regularly encourage and support other business to reduce their reliance on single use plastics and items through our ‘Simple Swaps’ initiative, where making small changes to your routines can significantly reduce the single use items in your bins.
Throughout July (and beyond) Plastic Free July participants across the globe will be making small, simple swaps in their day-to-day lives, whether that’s bringing reusable bags to the supermarkets, or swapping out plastic straws for metal, collectively making a massive difference to our communities and planet.
If you’re stuck for ideas, we’ll be sharing tips across our social media all month, or you can download our Simple Swaps brochure here. We also have a plastic recycling guide available to download here. If you’re looking to reduce your business’ waste output and optimise your waste strategy, get in touch today on 0330 1234 100.
