B&M, The Light Cinema & St George’s Primary complete beach litter pick

Local waste management company, B&M Waste Services, partnered with The Light Cinema and St. George’s Primary School, to conduct a litter pick along New Brighton beach.

As part of the day, the year 2 students from St. George’s Primary School were educated on the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling. The primary school and B&M Waste have developed a close working relationship over previous months, collaborating on their recent St. George’s Day Fair and an upcoming careers fair.

B&M Waste Services’ Little Litter Pickers programme launched last year, to educate future generations about the wider impact waste has on the environment. As part of the programme, students have the opportunity to take part in interactive lessons, tailored to their academic needs, at B&M’s state of the art innovation centre, Milner House.

The litter pick with St. George’s Primary School also supported World Ocean Day, a day that encourage individuals to think about what the ocean means to them, with hopes of conserving it for present and the future generations.

All waste collected on the day was taken back to B&M Waste’s Bromborough depot, where materials that can be recycled are recovered. Any waste that cannot be recycled is then sent for energy recovery. Here, energy is harvested from the residual waste to produce electricity and also steam, which produces thermal heating via the district heating system.

Speaking on the partnership, Lesley Morgan, Business Manager at The Light Cinema, said: “The Light Cinema in New Brighton was delighted to work with B&M Waste and St George’s Primary School to litter-pick on and around the beach and promenade. As a business that generates a lot of waste, we are eager to promote responsible disposal of litter, to protect the precious environment we are lucky enough to inhabit.

We were delighted by the commitment of young people and educators to protect the environment and we hope to develop closer links with B&M Waste, local schools and the New Brighteners to help reduce unnecessary rubbish and support the local community to keep New Brighton clean and tidy!”

Commenting on the day, Maria Williams, Education Programme Leader at B&M Waste, said: “We had such a fantastic morning litter picking with The Light Cinema and St. Georges Primary School. It is extremely important to educate the next generation on the environmental footprint that they are leaving behind and ways to make more choices.”
