B&M Waste join forces with Shelter in recycled furniture campaign

The North West’s largest independent waste management specialist has launched an initiative to supply the national charity Shelter with recycled furniture.

B&M Waste Services, which has sites in Wirral, Manchester and Norwich, provides businesses and organisations with carbon-neutral total waste management solutions including trade waste, hazardous waste, secure shredding, drainage and recycling.

B&M provides a clearance service to businesses – clearing offices and student accommodation and removing used furniture for recycling. This used furniture will now be donated to Shelter to be restored, upcycled and sold in the charity’s network of retail outlets to raise funds for the charity.

Mick Ashall, Director of B&M Waste Services said: “B&M’s commercial ethos is to divert as much material from landfill as possible – recycling used furniture is part of this commitment. B&M began working with Shelter in February 2014, when we launched the ‘Refuse not Refuge’ campaign – an initiative to raise awareness of the dangers of sleeping in large waste containers.  From our discussions with Shelter we discovered that we could do more to help the charity and we are delighted to now launch the recycled furniture campaign.”

B&M Waste is also liaising with its client and supply chain to source new household goods which will also be donated to Shelter and included in the charity’s “Furniture Starter Packs”. The Furniture Starter Packs are given to people who are being provided with housing and need assistance in equipping their new home.

Mick added: “We are now working with our clients and supply chain to source products that can be included in the furniture packs. We have already donated a batch of mattresses and we hope that other local businesses will support our campaign.”

Chris Broom, area manager for the North-West division of Shelter, said: “We are delighted that B&M has chosen to partner with Shelter and we would like to thank B&M for the initial batch of products which have been donated. The value of the donation stands at £1,080 and the items will be offered for sale in our Shelter shops, raising important income for the charity.

“Shelter already receives 470 calls a day and, with almost 4 million families living just one pay-cheque away from losing their home, we are determined to work tirelessly until there is a home for everyone”.
